Hi everyone, Nobuko here.

For the past week, the whole country has been mourning the loss of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, and I am no exception. Being a foreigner, my sense of loss can’t possibly amount to those of the Singaporeans. Yet, the significance of his death is unequivocal.

I am a student at NUS and I can definitely say that I would not be here in Singapore if it were not for Mr. Lee. His strong belief in the power of education, I feel, had an influence on my decision to come to Singapore to be exposed to one of the finest education in Asia. I want to thank him for building the foundations of a country and society that welcomes foreigners like myself with a warm and open heart.

My deepest sympathies go out to the Lee family and all of Singapore. May your soul rest in peace Mr Lee Kuan Yew.
